Woman refuses to give her brother’s dog back after he’s released from jail
There are lots of things we’d do for our siblings during times of need.
One woman took on the responsibility of her brother’s dog while he was in jail – but when he returned, she refused to give it back.
Now her family have turned against her, and even their parents have taken his side.
The sister named Libby took to Reddit to ask fellow users for their advice, posting under the username MyNamesIsLibby.
She explained that her 34-year-old brother Allan was incarcerated for six months, and didn’t trust his 35-year-old girlfriend Claire to look after his dog.
They made an agreement that Libby would care for the Yorkshire terrier named Hachi and Allan would pay for all expenses.
Claire was supposed to visit every weekend to walk Hachi and deliver dog food, but after two months she stopped, and made up different excuses each time.
When Hachi developed an infection and needed to see a vet, Claire didn’t respond to Libby’s call.
“I paid for the vet bills and medicine,” Libby said. “I didn’t get reimbursed. I took care of Hachi while Allan was in jail.”
After Allan was released from prison, him and Claire jetted off to South America for a two-week holiday, which turned into a two-and-a-half-month trip.
All the while, Libby looked after Hachi at home.
Then when Allan finally returned, he didn’t visit Hachi or attempt to take her back.
“And every time I brought up the vet bills and food and other expenses Allan would only make promises,” Libby said.
“After their trip I was convinced that I would never get paid and I’d already made up my mind that I was keeping Hachi.”
Following 10 months of Hachi being in Libby’s care, Allan finally came to her apartment and asked for his dog back.
“I told him no, Hachi is my dog now and I am not giving her away,” Libby said.
“The only way he’s getting Hachi is through a court order.”
Now, both their parents have taken Allan’s side and accused Libby of stealing her brother’s dog.
Despite the rest of the family disagreeing with her, many Reddit users backed Libby and criticised Allan.
One person said: “Hachi was effectively abandoned by her owners and you took her in and assumed the responsibilities and costs of her care. She is yours.”
Another agreed: “If your brother cared, he would have at least tried to pay you and see the dog immediately, instead of having a two and a half month holiday!”
Others have warned her to “keep an eye on Hachi” in case Allan attempts to slyly take her back.
Though some didn’t fully support Libby’s stance, with one person saying: “I’m not totally on your side because like you mentioned, I think you had made up your mind to keep the dog and were looking for excuses to validate that decision.”
